Study medicine at University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

Cattolica’s MD Medicine and Surgery provides the scientific basis and the theoretical and practical training essential for the exercise of the medical profession internationally. Students develop all the technical competencies required to operate independently and responsibly in the medical sector. The overall objectives are pursued using a teaching approach designed to examine health issues in depth in a holistic manner, taking account of the influence of the surrounding chemical - physical, biological and social environment.

The degree features a complete integration of basic and clinical sciences, achieved through a multidisciplinary approach and an early involvement in patient management, including both ethical issues and legal responsibilities, which are at the basis of the profession. In addition, medical anthropology, bioethics and medical humanities will be emphasized, as well as the ability to communicate with the patient and the family.

The curriculum of the programme is also designed to help students prepare for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and Step 2.

Delivery mode

Our hope and intention for 2021/22 intake are to entirely restore in-person teaching, while respecting any health and safety requirements set by national and local competent authorities.

In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, should students not be able to attend classes in person, a hybrid format of in-person and on-line will be guaranteed to enable attendance from home, while guaranteeing full access to all learning opportunities and resources.

Applications for academic year 2021/2022 are now closed. Updates about applications for academic year 2022/2023 will be posted on Università Cattolica website starting from September 2021. You may also express your interest by contacting us.

Admission requirements

Entrance Exam for EU candidates – important update

Due to the enduring pandemic circumstances, the Entrance Exam for the 6-year Degree in Medicine and Surgery originally scheduled for February 26th, 2021 will be postponed to July 13 - July 14, 2021.

Secondary School Diploma Requirements

The following requirements are based on the guidelines for admission published every year by the Italian Ministry for Education.

All candidates must:

  • complete high school studies and hold their Secondary School Diploma before August 30, 2021
  • hold a high school qualification conferred after a minimum of 12 years of previous global schooling and achieved after at least 2 years of attendance within the same national education system.

Qualifications obtained after 11 or 10 years of global schooling do not allow access to Italian universities, unless candidates satisfy one of the following additional conditions:

  1. They attended one (in case of 11 years) or two (in case of 10 years) years of university studies and took all the exams included in the relevant study plan. No transfer of credits can be requested for the university studies.
  2. They can provide evidence that they attended a pre-school year (this usually applies to some Latin American countries), which can be taken into consideration only if its attendance was compulsory, and its syllabus included development of reading and writing skills in the local language. Its validity must be certified by the relevant Italian Embassy.
  3. They successfully completed a Foundation Course from an Italian University. Foundations courses from non-Italian universities are not automatically accepted and their suitability as diploma integration will be evaluated case by case.

Proof of English Proficiency

All admitted candidates are required to provide English language proficiency.

For applicants whose first language is not English, they will be required to provide the following English Language Certificates:

  • TOEFL iBT overall score of at least 80; or Academic IELTS overall score of at least 6.0; or a TOEFL Computer Based of at least 213; or a TOEFL Paper Based of at least 550; or a Cambridge ESOL FCE Grade B; or
  • A document certifying that they have attended a high school where English is the language of teaching

The English Language Certificate (if applicable) will not be required at the time of applying for the Entrance Exam. However, it will be required as a prerequisite to complete the enrollment process.

Career opportunities

Upon successfully passing an assessed internship and the State Examination, and following registration with the Medical Association of their local Province, all Medicine and Surgery graduates are qualified to perform clinical care throughout Italy.

Graduates in Medicine and Surgery are qualified to carry out surgery in the various roles and in clinical, health and biomedical professional fields.

The programme is designed for students who wish to become qualified general practitioners.

A natural extension of the Medicine and Surgery training programme is access to specialty training schools in the sector or further studies in the three-year regional programme of specific training in general medicine for which graduate students in the LM-41 class are eligible.

Graduates from the degree programme taught in English will be eligible to participate in USLME Steps 1 and 2 and, thus, in the USA Post Graduate Training and Residencies, as well as in similar programmess scheduled in European countries or non-European anglophone countries.

Non-Italian graduates from the International MD Programme will have successfully attended Italian language courses essential for their integration into Italian society and, in particular, for doctor-patient communication in the national health context. Knowledge of the Italian language will favour the graduate’s access to the Specialty Training Schools within the Italian University.

Degree awarded upon completing the course: Laurea in Medicine and Surgery.
