Om utbildningen

The oceans remain one of our few unknowns, while marine exploration continues at an unprecedented scale. Fuelling this exploration is our ever increasing exploitation of the oceans. Do you love the ocean? Do you want to contribute to a knowledgebased and sustainable future? Do you have a Bachelors Degree in Marine Science, Oceanography, Biology, Chemistry or Earth Sciences? Then you should come to Gothenburg, Sweden.

The Marine Science Masters Programme gives you the theoretical and practical tools to work with marine tasks. You will get a broader interdisciplinary understanding of the marine system and you will deepen your expertise within your discipline.

Education

The program has one mandatory course. This course deals with marine projects, including marine measurement techniques and methods. Each student will get an individual study plan including courses in physical oceanography, marine biology, marine chemistry or marine geology, depending on the background of the student. Why Gothenburg?

The Department of Marine Sciences at University of Gothenburg harbours all disciplines of marine research: physical oceanography, marine biology, marine chemistry, marine geology and even conservation of marine heritage. Our approach to the ocean is system oriented and interdisciplinary. We base this approach on the notion that the ocean is different from terrestrial systems in many fundamental ways.

Field work is an integral part of our teaching. To make observations of the ocean you will be using our extensive infrastructure: field stations and laboratories, research vessels and measuring instruments for all marine disciplines. The Gothenburg region offers proximity to a wide range of marine environments, with different fresh water inputs, different tidal ranges and with different atmospheric, terrestrial and human influences. Our fjords act as giant field laboratories.

Career area

Employers in many areas of society look to marine scientists to find hands-on professionals, experts and managers. These employers are found within industry, consultancy, all levels of government and within academia. Marine scientists are needed because the ocean is such an integral part of human life and society.

Marine scientists are also sought after to handle a wide range of tasks, because of the integrated and systematic approach we apply when investigating the ocean. Marine scientists typically work with tasks related to fishery and maritime industry; energy and resources; environmental management and policy; marine, coastal and urban planning. Since the ocean remains a field of continuous exploration many tasks include an element of research.
