EMerald - Master's in Georesource Engineering

Master Programme on Resources Engineering

EMerald is an Erasmus Mundus and EIT-labelled Master’s programme created to establish the right balance between knowledge of resources and process-engineering techniques. A sustainable supply of raw materials is vital for the future of Europe. Become part of our mission to achieve this balanced vision.

Study at four European universities

EMerald is a two-year Master’s programme (120 ECTS) organised by four European Universities – University of Liège (ULiège), University of Lorraine (UL), Luleå University of Technology (LTU) and Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF). The programme is designed to focus on the following major aspects of Resources Engineering, Characterisation, Processing, Modelling and Management.

The programme is organised into four semesters (30 ECTS per semester). The first semester is in Liège, the second semester in Nancy, the third semester in Luleå or TUBAF and the fourth semester is in one of the four partner Universities.

The EMerald Master Programme has been designed to find the right balance between knowledge of resources(geology, landfills, urban mines, reserve characterisation and modelling)and process engineering techniques(comminution, sorting, preconcentration, extractive metallurgy and waste disposal).

Program structure

A broader view on the complete life cycle analysis of materials is explored during the course of the programme through a series of seminars taught by industrial partners. These seminars highlight strategic issues such as the economic, environmental and societal challenges of industrial operations.

The programme goes on to look at the expanded list of scarce Critical Raw Materials within the European Union and expands this focus into course units that explore the key factors that affect critical resource flows and supply, such as diversification, substitution and end-use industrial applications.

Year 1

In semester one, the University of Liège (ULiège) welcomes all students to the programme and provides them with necessary background skills in subjects such as mineral processing basics. In semester two, the University of Lorraine (UL) expands on this knowledge and provides students with a more advanced understanding of broader subjects such as flotation.

Year 2

The third semester offers students the option to specialise in upstream at LTU (primary resources) or downstream at TUBAF (secondary resources). The final semester can be spent in any of the university partners dependent on the thesis specialisation. Regardless of the university location, the Master thesis will be completed in close collaboration with an industrial partner or a research centre that will also host the students for an internship.

Who can apply?

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with basic knowledge in Geology (minimum 3 years of study or 180 ECTS credits) or a Bachelor’s Degree in Minerals Engineering, Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or a Master’s degree in Geology.

The EMerald Master Programme provides an engineering diploma, therefore at least 22.5 ECTS in university level mathematics is required for application eligibility.

Selection criteria

Selection of candidates is carried out as a cooperative process between the academic partner universities and the final selection is based on consensus agreement. The selection procedure is based on academic qualifications, with a focus on qualitative and quantitative indicators of the applicants:

  • Academic background
  • Motivation letter
  • Language skills
  • Work experience

All applications go through the same selection process regardless of the student’s gender. However, for students that are at the same level and have the same qualifications, priority will be given to under-represented genders. Students with special needs are encouraged to apply to the programme and should inform the administrative coordinator upon application, to allow us to take the necessary measures of care if the student is finally admitted to the programme.

Mandatory documents

  • A copy of your passport AND a sworn translation into English of your birth certificate*. Only selected students will have to provide us with a French translation of their birth certificate (this is compulsory to register at a French University)
  • A photo (ID format)
  • Your up-to-date resume in English (maximum 1 page)
  • A personal motivation letter in English
  • A copy of your High School Diploma and a sworn translation into English or French*
  • A copy of your higher education studies diploma and transcript of records with a sworn translation into English or French*
  • An English Proficiency test/document for non-English speakers (TOEFL min.87, IELTS min. 6.5 or any other document stating your English proficiency (B2-C1 min.)
  • Official documents highlighting your accomplishments over the last five years (studies, internships, employment)
  • A recommendation letter
  • An official document issued within 12 months of the submission deadline showing your place of residence. This could be a residence certificate issued in accordance with your municipality, normal registration rules or a certificate from your place of work, study or training issued by the employer or institution in question. The document must clearly state the date of emission of the document.

All copies must be certified. Simple translations can be accepted, but once in Belgium you will have to provide the original documents. Therefore it is useful to upload certified copies.*

*If your documents are originally in English, then you are not required to provide a translation

“EMerald” is not a Diploma in itself. It’s the name of the master courseThe following degrees will be provided by the different consortium universities, depending on the tracks chosen by the student:

  • University of Liège - Master in Mining and Geological Engineering
  • University of Lorraine - Master in Sciences de la Terre et des Planètes Environnement
  • Luleå University of Technology - Master of Science – Major: Geosciences
  • Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg - Master in Mechanical and Process Engineering
