How planning and design could transform a city
such as Stockholm towards the goal: ”A city that sustains the good life
of its citizens without depleting nature”.
The
Master's programme in Sustainable Urban Planning and Design aims to
provide students with a thorough understanding of the planning process
and the aesthetic, social, economic and environmental determinants that
contribute to sustainable urban development. The programme brings
together students of architecture, planning, civil engineering, and
natural and social sciences, who want to develop knowledge and skills
for analysing, synthesising and coordinating complex planning and
design tasks in an urban setting.
By merging different
disciplinary backgrounds into one programme, graduates acquire a
comprehensive understanding of urban planning and design, the
challenges of social, economic and environmental change, and how
professionals with different expertise can contribute to the
development of sustainable districts, cities and regions.
The
programme incorporates the former Master's programmes in Spatial
Planning and in Urban Planning and Design. It also offers a new
opportunity for specialisation, in Environment and Planning.
Programme outline
The
programme covers 2 years of full-time studies and consists of three
semesters of course work and one semester for the Master's thesis. The
course work encompasses a substantial share of studios and projects
that aim to develop students' practical skills and to gain a better
understanding of planning practice. To support the professional
training and to strengthen analytical skills, the curriculum also
contains a number of theoretical and methodological courses that
provide a contextual and conceptual framework. The programme offers
three tracks:
- Urban Planning and Design (UPD)
- Urban and Regional Planning (URP - formerly Spatial Planning) LINK
- Environment and Planning (EP)
The
three tracks represent different professional competences that are
involved in urban planning and design. However, during the programme
students from different tracks will interact in courses and projects to
foster a mutual exchange of knowledge and ideas.
