Masterprogram i mellanösternstudier

Middle Eastern Studies (CMES). The program will offer opportunities for students of various disciplines and backgrounds. In addition, through the capacities at CMES and Lund, the program will provide possibilities to accommodate the objectives of students who will apply for a PhD program and to those who wish to enter the private and public sectors. One of the most vital aspects of this MA is language training. Knowledge in a major Middle Eastern language is only recommended for admission. However, language training will be stressed throughout the years in addition to academic studies. The first semester builds a conceptual foundation through courses on relevant theory (A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Middle Eastern Studies), methods (Interdisciplinary Research Methods in the Middle East) and historical perspectives (The Making of the Contemporary Middle East). Elective courses in the second semester will be chosen in dialogue with the course coordinator of the program. To begin focusing their research, in the second semester students will take the required courses within their discipline. For example, students focusing in Human Rights Studies will take the courses that the Human Rights Studies department has determined to be mandatory for this disciplinary focus. Students who are on the PhD track will be asked to enroll in the necessary theoretical and methodological courses necessary for their discipline. The third semester offers students two choices: conduct an internship or study at a partner university either in Europe or the Middle East. We will encourage students to continue with their focus from the second semester and find academic and professional opportunities to strengthen their development. Students are encouraged to continue conducting research or collecting data for their theses during the third semester. For the final semester, students will be able to focus solely on their thesis and language training. Mentors (from CMES) and advisors (from discipline) will be assisting the student through this process and guide the student on plans after the completion of their MA. The field-based components of the program (the third term s qualified internship), moreover, apply the theoretical knowledge to the professional reality of the area of contemporary Middle East. The program prepares students both for a professional career and for further academic studies within the broad field of Middle Eastern Studies. The overall focus of the MA program is on personal development to foster critically thinking individuals. As a result, this master in Middle Eastern Studies at Lund University provides students with the education, network and skills necessary to continue with postgraduate studies as well as begin professional work in companies and organizations working in or with the Middle East. Prerequisites Admission Requirements: Students are required to have a Bachelor s degree and a high level of proficiency in English. IELTS with a minimum of 7.0 (none of the sections under 6.0) is required. Knowledge of a major Middle Eastern language is recommended but not required. Selections Procedures: Students must submit the standard Lund University application via www.studera.nu (transcripts and application) but will also be asked to submit a personal statement (800 words), three letters of recommendation (with signed cover sheet in sealed and signed envelope), CV (one page) and two short writing samples (less than 2000 words each). There will then be a preliminary list of applicants who will be asked to participate in an information call with CMES to ensure applicants are clear about the program. General information The Center for Middle Eastern Studies was inaugurated in 2007. It is an interdisciplinary area studies center working in coordination with academic departments at Lund University, the international academia and the private sector. The research being conducted at CMES is primarily done through a project named The Middle East in the Contemporary World funded by the government of Sweden and the Swedish Research Council. The project has four research domains: (A) Contemporary Interpretations of Islam and Muslim Culture, (B) Hydropolitics, Security and International Law, (C) Migration and Mobility - Exile and the Politics of Belonging and (D) the Middle East in Sweden. While the center s expertise is mainly on the above four domains, CMES is working in coordination with all departments at Lund University who are working on the region to offer a truly interdisciplinary MA program. Consequently, the purpose of the program is to provide students with applied and specialized knowledge of Middle Eastern Studies.
