Master Program in Wind Power Project ManagementA wind energy project, be it the installation of a single turbine or a wind farm of 150 units, has multiple stakeholders. Some are situated in the core of the project and others on the periphery, but each with a particular set of requirements and expectations, and each representing a value component of the project. As global wind power projects grow in magnitude and complexity, there is a corresponding requirement for management professionals with generalist’s perspectives to successfully guide these interdisciplinary ventures from concept to start-up, while balancing competing interests across the stakeholder matrix.
Project management is widely acknowledged as planning, scheduling and managing change, conflict, and resources for the successful completion of a specific project. At Gotland University, the Wind Power Project Management program balances project management disciplines with wind power industry specifics to create a particular wind power project management methodology. The on-campus schedule follows a sequential study track developed on wind energy and project management modules. Energy utilization, turbine technology, wind assessment, project economics, environmental impact, meteorology and spatial planning are representational subjects of this custom curriculum. An independently researched and written thesis in English completes the study plan.
The all-English language program has an interdisciplinary orientation to prepare students for global management positions across the wide spectrum of wind energy industry operating and investment interests, i.e.,wind farm operating companies, consulting firms, local and national governments, component manufacturing and supply chain companies, research institutions or others working with renewable energy and/or environmental balance issues. Graduates with prior wind or other industry employment experience may reenter the work force with advanced management skills qualifying for critical project management, operations, or economic development positions. Graduates with this program as their initial employment entry degree have demonstrable knowledge relevant to wind farm development, operations and community relations.
Program Goals
The focus of the Wind Power Project Management program is to provide progressive, contemporary education for professionals who design, develop, implement, and manage wind farms in the global economy. It is equally beneficial for those responsible for the external economic, social or legal environments within which a wind farm is located and operates such as local and national regulatory bodies, infrastructure and supply-chain organizations. The program is generalist in outlook, with a broad orientation as opposed to that of a specialist.
This is an objective view, recognizing that alternative energy and sustainability are evolutionary and dynamic fields with multiple vested interests, both internal and external to wind power technology. It is a view that methodically tracks wind energy industry, research and environmental requirements and new developments while continuously adjusting educational programs to meet future current and demands across all sectors. By illustration, the wind energy industry has special need of globally-oriented individuals with commutative and consensus building soft skills of management in concert with balancing competing interests across the stakeholder matrix. The program of study in Wind Power Project Management addresses those requirements.
